Efficiency tends to be the name of the game when it comes to ongoing professional development and growth, but ultimately our mental health is just as important as the documents we write and the emails we send. Happiness at work can mean different things for different people. For some, monetary benefits and rewards can be the cause for overall job satisfaction and happiness whereas for others, working in a friendly environment with a greater work life balance can far outweigh any dollar amount.
Yes, there are things that employers can do to aid their employee’s happiness, but ultimately the responsibility for experiencing happiness at work rests with you, the employee.
You can choose to be happy at work. This may sound like a simple task, but it can be much more difficult to put into action than it seems. One way to be happy at work is to think positively. Dwell on the aspects you do enjoy about your job whether it be that your office has a great coffee machine or that you have a great relationship with your team. Finding positivity in the small things and being grateful for those has proven to offer both social, psychological and emotional benefits.
Shawn Anchor once gave a Ted Talk about The Happy Secret to Better Work and said
“90% of your long-term happiness is predicted not by the external world, but by how your brain processes the world. If we change our formula for happiness and success, we can change the way we affect reality”
In other words, by changing how you measure happiness and how you define it, you can achieve it!
We all like to stay around co-workers who have a positive attitude and look content within themselves. Seeing others in a happy state of mind with a positive attitude subconsciously leads by example to those who may be less motivated and contributes towards creating a fun and successful culture at work. This overall happiness will not only boost the general mood within an office environment but increase productivity and performance for all.
