Onboarding a new hire can be a stressful period for an organisation. However, if thought, time and effort are put into it then it can be an incredibly rewarding experience that will better your organisation and your incoming employee.
Setting a new hire up for success is vital and proper onboarding is the key to it.
So, how do you ensure your onboarding process is a positive one? Keep reading below to see my top tips for onboarding a new hire.
Ensure everything is ready to go
Imagine arriving for your first day of work with a new organisation and they aren’t prepared for you to be there. In a workplace, it can be embarrassing and show a lack of care for a new starter. You want your new member of staff to feel valued and as though they are part of the team. Ensuring they have a laptop, workbook, calculator or whatever it may be for them to complete their job is critical.
Feeling valued is essential on your first day, any new starter will confirm this.
Schedule Get-To-Know-You Meetings with Staff Members
Did you ever move schools when you were a kid? Or start at a new sporting or social club? Remember how daunting and awkward it can be as a new kid?
That feeling is still very real in the workplace. It is very important to make a new employee feel valued, wanted and part of the team. Introducing an inductee to the whole team can be either through planned 1-on-1 meetings, team meetings or even better, lunch at a café.
Any option is a great option to make your new employee feel valued and have a desire to come to work.
Personalise the Process
One size does NOT fit all when it comes to onboarding. Everyone learns and develops differently and at different speeds therefore a training or onboarding plan needs to allow for this. Getting an understanding of the individual you are hiring and what their style is will allow you to tailor their plan to ensure they feel valued but are also learning and retaining information.
Allow time for Training – Put in Diary
It is easy for training to be pushed, rescheduled and missed when something that is seen as more important comes up. Not missing training is crucial. The only way to ensure that onboarding isn’t missed is by booking times in the diary and allowing time for staff members to plan their time around ensuring the onboarding process is as thorough as it needs to be.
Try to make it fun
Onboarding can be information overload. There is so much to learn from other employees that it can be a long process. Finding a way to keep it enjoyable and upbeat can go a long way to ensuring it is a fun and rewarding process.
Onboarding is such a vital part of every organisation. A good process that sets people up to succeed is so important in our modern world. Adhering to some of the above tips and creating a foolproof onboarding process will go a long way to ongoing company success.
