When it comes to the job market, it has become more important than ever to stand out and showcase your best skills to potential employers. But during your job search, you may come across your ideal job that needs to be filled immediately. If you are flexible with work hours and you have the availability, an opportunity can present itself through what is called a temporary job. When looking for a job, you will come across temporary job posts and this blog will outline when to accept a temporary job.
TRANSFERABLE SKILLS
Currently, people often complete their studies in specific areas and end up working in a completely different role. This is becoming more common because people gain skills from their placements in areas such as Social Work, Nursing and Law and those skills can be used in all kinds of roles.
MAKE USE OF OTHER SKILLS
While updating your CV or writing a cover letter, you may notice that you have developed other skills from a past or current role. If there are any skills that get your attention, you can highlight those skills in your application for a temporary job. For example, you may have strong communication skills from engaging with stakeholders and writing grant applications. From there, you may be interested in applying for a temporary role with a Not-For-Profit organisation. If you have experience with volunteering, you also have the skills that can be used to apply for a temporary job too.
DISCOVER A NEW INDUSTRY OR POTENTIAL NEW CAREER PATH
Is there a particular job that you have always wanted to try out? A temporary job is the best way to start a new role! You can find out firsthand if the temporary job is something that you want to do. Plus, there is the bonus of not needing to commit to the role on a long-term basis. If you end up finding out that the temporary role is not for you, that is okay too! As upon accepting a temporary role, you will be made aware of the start and end date for the position.
THE OPPPORTUNITY TO BUILD ON YOUR CURRENT SKILLS
Do you have customer service experience in retail or hospitality? If that is the case, you may want to demonstrate your customer skills in a Receptionist role for an organisation. Perhaps you may be interested in a Customer Service Consultant role for a call centre. From having customer service experience, you can highlight your skills from different industries when answering questions at a job interview.
Through applying for a temporary job, it shows that we are adaptable to an ever-changing world and this has affected workplaces. As employees, we all have something to offer and the range of work experiences out there all add up. From our time in the workforce, it is those experiences that help us to demonstrate our capabilities during job interviews. In general, a temporary job provides a job applicant with career options. You can guide the direction to take in your current career or head towards a new career.
