Are you feeling exhausted?
Are you feeling distant from your job?
Are you experiencing feelings of negativity in relation to your job?
Are you struggling to match the same levels of productivity you have in the past?
These are all key signs of burnout!
Burnout is defined as a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity.
IDENTIFYING BURNOUT
Burnout can present in many ways – such as physical, emotional, and behavioural.
Below are some of the key factors:
Physical: feeling tired, frequent headaches, change in appetite or sleep and lowered immunity.
Emotional: a sense of failure, self-doubt, loss of motivation, feeling helpless and detachment.
Behavioural: withdrawing from responsibilities, isolating yourself, procrastinating and skipping work.
WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING BURNOUT?
Pause, take a deep breath and change direction!
If you continue to push yourself through the feelings you are experiencing, it will only result in further emotional and physical damage. See below some ways you can deal with burnout:
– Turn to other people
– Change the way you look at work
– Add exercise into your daily routine
– Support your mood and energy levels with a healthy diet
HOW TO AVOID BURNOUT IN THE FUTURE?
Something I had found while doing research and has used in the past refers to the Three R approach.
Recognise – watch for the warning signs
Reverse – undo the damage by speaking up and managing stress
Resilience – build your resilience to stress by taking care of your emotional health
Burnout is a real thing, experienced by many people. Keep an eye out for signs within yourself and those around you and never be afraid to speak up and ask for support or help!
