How do you get an employer’s attention? Employers are inundated with resumes and applications on a daily basis.  Standing out and getting noticed by hiring managers is the only way to get hired. Most applications will typically show off unique qualifications which can become invisible to a hiring manager as they will see many qualified candidates every day. With this in mind, many people are now sitting wondering how to stand out from other candidates when they apply for a job.  Competition is tough and a lot of people will be applying for the same position as you. You need to put yourself above the rest of the competition by getting your resume and application noticed.

Revise your resume and do your homework

Have another look at your resume.  Make sure it is professional and grammatically correct and presentable.  Add keywords to your resume that are related to the job you are applying for.  This illustrates how you meet the specific requirements of the job and will make you stand out from the others.  Before you attend an interview, be sure you know your resume inside and out and can provide answers to demonstrate this. Job candidates who know the company, the market and the people will excel. Yes, you will want to research the company you are applying to but take your search further. Use your research to ask informed questions during your interview. Not only will you feel thoroughly prepared when meeting with the hiring manager, but you will also possess a solid foundation to form a connection, which is your ultimate goal during an interview.

Show enthusiasm and passion

Express excitement and interest in the opportunity.  Show your interest in the company and its culture with an engaging and positive attitude and communicate why you would be the best candidate for the role. You also need to be passionate about the job you are applying for and demonstrate a growth mindset, express an interest to learn and adapt and show an interest in the company and the role you will play will be noticed.  Being passionate allows you to fit in perfectly with the role you are applying for, and employers recognise that those with passion tend to stay in the long term as they love their job. Another great way to find a job is to translate your hobbies and passions into a career.

Your personality and presence on social media

What makes you unique and sets you apart from the competition?  A hiring manager will be looking for someone who can fit into the company culture, so showing your personality will highlight how well you know yourself and how comfortable you are with other people, so be calm and confident in your abilities.  Just like your resume, your social media accounts will also tell a story and most employers and recruiters will link you to your social media to get a better idea of who you are.  They can see your interests and will get an insight into your personal life.  Before applying, take some time to look at all your social media platforms and also review and update your LinkedIn profile as this will be the first place they will look.

Make yourself stand out! Remember it is up to you to stand out from the other job candidates.  These suggestions will give you the opportunity to think about how you can go about doing this and ultimately you will be more confident with a positive attitude when it comes to the interview.  Good luck and go and get that job!
