It’s only human nature to sometimes feel overwhelmed or stressed whilst at work. As hard-working, dedicated or passionate as you may be – sometimes unfortunately a heavy workload may just be too much to deal with and you might feel your mental health or energy deflating. The good news is – It is normal and it is okay! It happens with everyone from time to time, and the best way to overcome stress at work is to reflect on the moment and how you are feeling.

Below are my 5 top tips on how to cope with being overwhelmed at work.

1. STAY ORGANISED

The best way to avoid feeling overwhelmed in the first place is to try to stay on top of things. If you know you are going to have a busy day or even week, take the time to write down all the tasks you must achieve and prioritise them in order of importance. This will give you a clear over-view on what needs to be done and when.

2. ASK FOR HELP

If you do find yourself stuck or overwhelmed on how to do something or how to fix a problem, do not be afraid to politely ask for help. Whether that be one of your colleagues, your Manager or anyone from your team at work that you feel comfortable around. Most of the time, it helps to have a fresh set of eyes and ears to help you out.

3. TAKE A MOMENT TO BREATHE AND RELAX

Sounds cliché I know! But I cannot emphasize enough the importance on having a glass of water, going for a quick walk, getting some fresh air and clearing your head. Maybe listen to some music or have a quick snack. Step away from the moment or situation that is causing you stress and try to wind down.

4. POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

Remind yourself of how great you are! Reflect on all the good things you have done and how hard you have worked. Remember you are only human, and it is totally normal to fall down sometimes!
What matters is that you believe in yourself and remember that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

5. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF!

Last, but certainly not least, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating healthy and participating in regular exercise. If you feel you are burning out at work, or you are overwhelmed, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you feel better mentally and physically.

In conclusion, there is no need to panic if you find yourself overwhelmed at work – it is normal and most importantly manageable. Prioritise your tasks, stay organised, ask for help, reflect and look after yourself. Just like the good old saying – “Rome wasn’t built in a day!”.

Take your time and do not be afraid to reach out if you need.
